Are you standing still when God’s calling you to move?

Too many Christians are waiting for breakthrough while standing still. But faith was never meant to be passive. The promises of God are real—but so is the call to contend.

The book of Joshua shows us a bold, action-driven faith. Joshua didn’t wait around hoping things would change. When the Gibeonites called for help, he responded with immediate obedience. He marched all night (Joshua 10:9). He trusted the word of the Lord: “Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand” (Joshua 10:8). And he prayed a faith-filled, history-shifting prayer: “Sun, stand still” (Joshua 10:12). And it did.

This is what active Christianity looks like—stepping into the promises of God even before the results are visible. Contending in faith means moving forward when your senses say otherwise. The Israelites saw giants and challenges. But walking by sight weakens faith. Real faith says, “I know what God said—and I’m taking a step.”

That’s the kind of faith Jesus empowers us to walk in. Like Joshua, we’re called to possess promises, not just read about them. And like the early church described in Ephesians 6, we are in a battle—not against people, but against spiritual powers. So we don’t fight with fists. We fight with truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God.

And yes—this fight will cost us comfort.

Contending in faith means you pray when you’d rather panic. You love when it’s easier to retreat. You obey God’s Word even when culture pulls you the other way. And you speak boldly, live righteously, and love supernaturally because Jesus lives in you.

It’s time to stop watching from the sidelines. Jesus didn’t rescue us to make us spectators—He called us into the field. Into battle. Into love. Into schools. Into culture. Into cities. Into active, Spirit-led Christianity.

So where are you standing still when God is calling you to march?

Where have you allowed fear to freeze you when God’s promise is waiting?

Today is a good day to say yes again. Not just with your words—but with your walk.

  1. What does it mean to “contend in faith” in your current season of life?

  2. Joshua marched all night based on a promise from God. Can you think of a time you had to take action before you saw results? What helped you move forward?

  3. Ephesians 6 lists spiritual armor for believers.
Which part of that armor do you find yourself using most often—and which one do you tend to neglect?

  4. The sermon reminds us that love is one of our spiritual weapons. How can love be a powerful force when contending for people, cities, or situations?

  5. Active Christianity often requires us to resist cultural pressures. Where do you feel tension between culture and the life Jesus is calling you to live? How do you navigate that?
