Breakthrough Starts With Letting Go | Philippians 3:12–14
We all want breakthrough.
Breakthrough in our faith.
Breakthrough in our habits.
Breakthrough in our relationships.
But what if the reason we’re stuck isn’t because God isn’t moving…
but because we’re still holding onto what He already redeemed?
In Philippians 3:12–14, Paul gives us a roadmap for a life that moves forward:
Forget what is behind.
Strain toward what is ahead.
Press on toward the goal.
1. Breakthrough starts with identity, not effort
Before Paul talks about striving, he anchors everything in this truth:
“Christ has already taken hold of me.”
Breakthrough doesn’t begin with what you do—it begins with who you are.
You’re not striving for acceptance.
You’re living from acceptance.
When you get this wrong, you’ll spend your life trying to earn what’s already been given.
2. You can’t receive more while holding onto the past
Paul says he does one thing:
he forgets what is behind.
Not erase it. Not deny it.
But release its grip.
You can’t move forward if your hands are full.
3. Four things that keep us stuck
Paul’s challenge applies to all of us. We tend to hold onto:
• Past Failures
Shame says: “This is who you are.”
Jesus says: “That’s not your identity anymore.”
If Paul let his past define him, the church would’ve never been built through him.
• Past Hurts
Pain done to you can quietly shape how you live.
Unforgiveness feels like control—but it costs you your calling.
You can have comfort.
You can have control.
But you can’t have both and step fully into what God has for you.
• Past Success
This one’s sneaky.
What God did before can become what you rely on instead of Him.
The greatest enemy of future breakthrough
might be yesterday’s victory.
• Past Experiences with God
Moments with God are meant to be altars—not idols.
We don’t chase old encounters.
We follow a living Jesus who is still moving today.
4. God doesn’t erase your past—He redeems it
This is where it gets powerful.
God doesn’t waste anything.
What was broken becomes testimony.
What was painful becomes ministry.
What was lost becomes purpose.
Your past isn’t your prison—it’s raw material for redemption.
5. The real prize isn’t breakthrough—it’s Jesus
We often think breakthrough means:
better circumstances
answered prayers
easier life
But Paul reframes it completely:
The prize is Christ Himself.
Not what He gives.
Not what He fixes.
Not what He changes.
Him.
Final Thought
If you’re asking God for more…
check what you’re still holding onto.
Because you can’t embrace what’s ahead
until you release what’s behind.
Paul says to “forget what is behind.” What’s one thing from your past you find hardest to release—and why?
Which of the four areas (failure, hurt, success, or past experiences) do you most relate to right now?
How does understanding that “Christ has already taken hold of you” change the way you approach growth and obedience?
Have you ever turned a past moment with God into something you try to recreate? What does it look like to follow Him today instead?
What is one practical step you can take this week to “let go” and move forward?
